Studio painting easels are the most professional kind of painting easels, being specifically designed to meet the needs of professional artists. These are usually huge and very expensive as well. They are immobile, which is a good thing. They offer a large area to hold your canvas and are best for the vigorous kind of painter that does regular paintings either for clients or for galleries. Table-top easels are a smaller kind, tailored to the kind of artist that does not paint on the regular. They are smaller, and hardly consume any floor space. They can be folded up when they are not needed. Due to the limited space, table top easels are not the best kind when it comes to painting large canvases.

Your preferences as an artist will also determine the kind of painting easel that you get. There are some painters that like doing their painting while they are seated, while most prefer an upright posture. Horse designs are made for the former group as they come with a dedicated sitting space. The latter come as free standing easels. Usually, there are two kinds of designs- tripod and H-frame. Tripod painting easels usually have a three leg stance and are the most common. They are in most cases movable, and are used when the space is not too huge. H-frame designs are usually bigger and are best suited to a dedicated painter that paints more often. They are less movable, depending on the size and are usually more expensive. Both of these have adjustment allowances, to give you the freedom of adjusting the verticality of the painting surface so that it can match your needs. Rarely will you find one that denies this need.

Some artists prefer portability, and there are designs that are meant to provide just that. There are two types of these kinds of painting easels though. There are those with collapsible legs which enable you to reduce the bulk of the easel. They can be reduced to a backpack kind of design. They are usually lightweight to make the portability less stressful. Larger easels can also be portable as well, but these only have legs to enable room to room movement, or indoor to outdoor. These are however not easels you would like to carry with you when you are out on a picnic as they are simply too big.
French easels are pretty common as well as they offer an all-in-one kind of package. They give you a sketch box, the easel itself and a carrier space for your canvases. They fall into the portable painting easels class.
