They were/are in fact good friends, but they are not related. Billy Joe Armstrong did co-write "Radio" and he even played at a show with them. At one point, Billy Joe Armstrong was even invited to join Rancid, but turned it down to focus on Green Day.

They are quite a bit like the clash. Well if i was describing them to someone who dint know rancid id say closest thing to them was clash. No where near as good as the clash though, obv. Still mint though
