Not really. Here in Japan, you can try out for your black belt after at least a year. Some of the kids where I teach just got them (13-14 years old). First dan isn't super special, anybody can get it with training. Anything above 1-dan and it gets crazy. There are different regulations here (ex. no colour belts), I'm not sure how the belt system works back home in Canada or in America though.
