Part #1: How Divorce Affects Family Dynamics
Remember, divorce will probably be confusing for your children and sometimes it can be difficult to know how to talk to them about it. But it is essential to have these conversations. If you have young children, sometimes they do not understand the meaning and permanence of divorce, so be sure to take age-appropriate communication seriously. Taking the time to explain about divorce helps your child make some sense of what is happening in the family. More often than not, by letting them talk to you about their feelings, it will help them to understand how to deal with a parent moving out of the house or the unhappiness and anger of divorce. During these conversations, it is important to be honest and not critical of your co-parent. Your children will want to know why their lives are being upset. When you first talk to your child, include only the most important and immediate issues. Your children need to know their basic needs will continue to be met. They need to hear that someone will still fix breakfast in the morning, read books with them and tuck them in bed at night. They need to know that their relationship with BOTH you and your co-parent will continue, if possible.
