A lot of people forget that Brandon DeWilde was nominated for an Academy Award for this role in this movie..He was suberb as "Little Joey" and added to the reason this movie is an all-time classic...Brandon DeWilde was killed in a traffic accident when he was only 30 years old in 1972.

You are absolutely right, and added to the tension of a great scene is the dog lying in front of the bar..When Wilson gets up to confront Shane, the dog gets up slowly and quietly leaves the room...just like he knew what was coming....Wow!

The Wilson hit man character was who made this film so great. Jack Palance "prove it" in those tall boots and wide stance was a class act! Awesome ending!

Love the part at 3.23 were the dog walks out of the bar, he knows the shits goin down. Wilson your a low down yankee liar. Great movie.

2nd. greatest western shootout in movie history I love it ....but 1st.for me is henry fonda and charles bronson Once Upon A Time In The West.

There have been some superb westerns, SHANE is still the BEST of all without doubt. Ladd & Palance were fantastic, the direction likewise. The dog getting up & leaving when Wilson stands up is a stroke of genius. Note the dog initially remains in situ when Shane(good guy in white hat!) walks past. However, the dog senses Wilson's malignant character and escapes asap. Brilliant. Wilson couldn't take Shane, nor will any other film! Fantastic.

If I remember correctly, in the book there's a fan-shaped spread of blood above Shane's gun-belt, so he probably does die..We had to read the book at school, long ago. Loved it.Best western novel. Best western movie.
