Of course it should be always the very last resource if nothing else seems to work, so of course other methods should be tried out first. For the child's sake as early in life as possible and not like Nellie. I wish she'd grown up with the Ingels's. Anyways, the right kind of spanking oughtn't kill a person or leave any traumas but do what it's meant to - teach a lesson.
