He became bitter when he lost The Tonight Show to Jay Leno. He still has a brick on his shoulder regarding it. That I think is the root of it all. When his ratings eventually fell to Leno, and the Oscar hosting failure, the only thing that brought him any sort of sense of achievement was getting the Hollywood crowd on his side politically (hence the Emmy wins). It happened a little to Jay to due to his wife being involved in a lot of Hollywood committees and trying to fit in.
