PART 1 -- She forgets 1 thing (being generous) , SELISHNESS. I am, you are and she is. ACKNOWLEDGE this, then10,000 years of evolution, then we sit down & talk about socialism. She doesn't like it, but capitalism HAS won; economic and financial downturns and ALL. Capitalism NEEDS to and will survive our great, great,.. grandchildrens lifetimes. Reg of markets, again revamped, ok, not the issue. Our lifetimes and current state of affairs are a blip on screen. Recent history is easy to pick on.

Part 2 -- It is Ironic for her to speak, somewhat truthfully, about the dormant powers that lie in wait. How long have she & company been waiting? To derive satisfaction from this, I find disheartening, but real; please study her tone and mannerisms. The only answer is, CAPITALISM, to our current humanity . ::request, retraction of fangs:: please think about it and their agenda. Unemployed 66/7 who can see past his current reality.

Friedman said that crises create change, but didn't say free market need it. The exact opposite effect is caused from these "shocks," resulting in a new government program with every crisis. "Its easy to be ready when you have the same solution to every crisis." Socialists like Naomi think that government solves all problems, even though it has done the exact opposite in every instance in history. She says how people didn't vote for free markets, they just come to be when socialism fails :)

she's more aesthetically pleasing than Chomsky

Friedman would school Klein on free markets. What Klein is saying is she is against corporatism. All those of the Austrian School of Economics oppose corporatism and the same bailouts that Klein is against. What I don't understand is when Ron Paul speaks and Klein agrees, she will act like she feels his intentions are wrong, and therefore oppose ideas of free markets. I have seen Klein on Maher show endorsing free markets accidentally. Then she got tougue tied and Bill stepped in and saved her

Gosh I hate to agree with a socialist but her perception on the War in Iraq and the economy of the War on Terror is spot on. Bush is NOT a capitalist, he is a fascist. The problems we face today are not the result of free markets, but because of the existence of government intervention. This shock therapy that she speaks of almost always results in more government- not less. Government has no money, so all they can do is steal from one person and give to another. Still, detroit is a mess.

Regarding Freidman..."-he slipped all too easily into claiming both that markets ALWAYS work and that ONLY markets work. Its extremely hard to find cases in which Freidman acknowledged the possibility that markets could go wrong or that government intervention could serve a useful purpose."-Paul Krugman, most recent Nobel Prize winner in economics (emphasis mine).

I can't resist - you're wrong again:1) Cliches are those expressions oft repeated and hackneyed but not necessarily true; 2) one definition of irony is "contrary to plan or expectation" - which qualifies my remarks about Freidman as perhaps a quadruple entendre, as Freidman's policies often produce unexpected negative outcomes, not to mention the self-contradictory logic of his supporters; 3) empiricism means actually collecting data, not relying on theory, a big problem for Freidmanites.

threatlevelorange - First, these videos do not represent her views. If you want to understand Klein you need to read her book. Second, her book provides detailed information about Freidman with copious footnotes. Third, Chicago School economics result in the MASSIVE redistribution of wealth...away from the poor and working class (and lately even the middle class) and toward the top of the income distribution. Is that what YOU support?
threatlevelorange (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
Right when she is about to make a point she jumps to the next topic, leaving questions about Milton Friedman totally unanswered. At no point did she even begin to challenge the idea of capitalism. It doesn't seem like she ever has. She likes government-sponsored redistributive properties in economy, but never explains how capitalism is inferior.
