But the mystery at first was "How did they get these huge blocks into the middle of this field with almost no trace?" Then they figured about how they were transported therte and now they are saying why it was built

Fan119Your sense of National Pride is commendable. The Gobekli Tepe complex is indeed a marvel of the late Mesolithic and pre-dates Stonehenge on the order of 4,000 years. But it was discovered (by an American) only in 1964, whereas the 'bunch of rocks in a circle' has sat out on the open Salisbury Plain since it was built. Its mystique rests on the fact that no one ever knew what it was or was for until recent times. The purpose and function of Gobekli Tepe is well-documented.Best,Feanor

Stonehenge is an overrated monument Gobekli Tepe in southern Turkey is MUCH older, it was built around 10th millennium BC. Not only is it older but an more astounding piece of architecture not just a bunch of rocks in a circle.

It was built in 3 phases (with a few tweaks here and there), over a period of 1500 years - many centuries before there were any Celts, Druids or Romans. It was begun about 3100 BC with a simple earthen circle, then they added the Blue Stones, then they got rid of the Blue Stones and installed the now-familiar Sarcen Stones.Yes, it was astronomically constructed, but is thought to have been used as a Healing Place.Very little is known about the people who started it or finished it.Best,Feanor

i could be wrong because the timing would be wrong about the romans IF it was built around the time of the great pyramids. Maybe i dunno....Irish travellers?...Gypsies?....
