accually, Tavington was based on a cruel and brave man, known as "the Butcher" because of the way he tortured his captured prisoners. He did surrender several times, but only after taking many american lives in battle

Mel was coming off the success of Braveheart. The Patriot never came close. It was too PC and historically inaccurate. The 18th century British light infantry was trained in guerilla tactics and used it to subdue the Irish and Scot uprisings in the 1700's and earlier. During the Revolution they enlisted Royal Rangers which were made up of american loyalists. In the south under Cornwallis and Tarleton they used guerilla tactics to horrible effect.
