March 2005The President of Taiwan's stubborn push for independence has made him China's Public Enemy Number One. But how likely are these tensions to escalate into a military conflict? "The world cannot sit by idly to see an undemocratic China remove the freedom, democracy and rights of Taiwan's citizens," laments President Chen Shui-Bian. But despite his best efforts, Taiwan's international support is dwindling. Only 25 countries still have diplomatic ties with it. Everyone else recognises mainland China. And since Chen came to power, China has stepped up its rhetoric, making it clear it will attack if it feels Taiwan is moving towards a formal declaration of independence. "As everyone knows, Taiwan is an inseparable part of the Chinese territory," states one Chinese commander. "The task of our military is to defend the motherland and to ensure its territorial integrity." President Chen's problems are further compounded by the deep political divides in Taiwan. Only half the country considers him their legitimate leader. The others believe he is a crook who staged a mysterious shooting the day before the elections, when he was trailing badly, to boost his support. And much as the Taiwanese tend to see themselves as a sovereign country, few want to go to war over it. After all, as one woman says, "Mainland China is so big and we are so small."

SINGADRAGON: would you please state your source?cuaem: I doubt any Taiwanese, other than the aboriginals and Europeans/ Japanese who aren't related to Chinese, would say their ancestors wasn't Chinese

Most people hate Ma Ying Jeou for kissing China's ass. That is why I predict the DPP will win next year. Since Ma Ying Jeou took power, the stock market dropped 3900 points. From 9000 to 4700.

"However, outside of taiwan888, nobody outside of some chen shui bien followers think taiwan is a country, not UN, no country in this world. Only idiots like chen shui bien and alike will." False, as 28.6% of Taiwanese chose official independence (Change the name ROC to Taiwan), and 48.2% stood neutral. (Duke)

Thats true that they have changed... but IMO i wouldnt trust them because of them kissing china's ass so much, i think KMT is plannin to reunify and thats my opinion, which could lead to taiwans exports being cheapened and the quality lowered like chinese stuff and just abit less than 50% of the population quite pissed off.
taiwanrox888 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
One factor in the reelection of the KMT was that KMT has undoubtedly, changed much. Chiang Kai shek's son, Chiang Ching Guo, established a more democratic Taiwan, and replaced all Chinese ROC members with Taiwanese ones. Not to mention Chen Shui Bian's Super anti China stance was dangerous. KMT is not some "pro reunification" party with China, but rather a party that supports a more friendly stance with China.
k2625299 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
its stupid though because the taiwanese people who support that taiwan is part of china are the decendents of KMT members or whatnot, who, obviously decided they wanted independence... bit hypocritical there. The KMT guy Chiang Kai-shek came SECOND (after Stalin and AHEAD OF HITLER) in random killings, and now his party is back in power. SERIOUSLY! Taiwanese people are hopeless, i feel bad for the people living there who realise that as well.

ashcg123,taiwanrox,you both can say whatever you like. The fact is that 85% of the United Nation members recognised Taiwan as part of the Territory of China. We are oversea Chinese from South East Asia, we hated people like you who like to break out from the Chinese community. You guys should change your names & stop eating Chinese food & speak "Menan" dialect which is also spoken widely in S'pore. If possible change your face to look like a Japanese.Your democratic process is a disgrace.
cuaem (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
I'm OK with Taiwan independence, just don't forget your Chinese ancestry.
ashcg123 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
Taiwan is an independent, democratic nation that is separate from China. However, it is still considered part of the Republic of China. NOT People's republic though
